Sutherland

Sutherland is in the wild area of Scotland, cliffs, islands, moorland and mountains - yet with glorious sandy beaches to rival many across the world. For example - Embo, near Golspie is twinned with Kaunakakai in Hawaii, for very good reasons! The area boasts many historical landmarks - runied castles and ancient monuments.

This area is a paradise for golfers, fishermen, wild life enthusiasts and will soon become the favourite place for mountain bikers! Whatever the weather, there is a welcome in the Highlands.

View across Firth to mountains

Dunrobin Castle, dating from around 1400, is the largest house in north Scotland and houses an enormous collection of tapestries, furniture and clan memorabilia. Not to be missed are the formal gardens designed by Sir Charles Barry. In addition, for those interested in ancient history acollection of Pictish Stones are on display.

The monument on Ben Bhraggie, is associated with the Highland Clearances, you might also want to visit Badbea Clearance Village (north of Helmsdale) and Croick Church near Ardgay. Here, evidence left by evicted Highlanders remains - messages scratched into the glass windows !

Further north of Golspie are further coastal villages - Brora, be sure to visit the Clyneelish Distillery, or Helmsdale's Timespan Heritage Centre.Further inland, amidst more dramatic scenery is the Falls of Shin Visitor Centre (salmon leaping in season) or from the Ferrycroft Countryside Centre in Lairg, take the Ord Archaeology Trail to see Bronze Age sites, cairns etc.

Sunshine over water

Ross & Cromarty

Ross and Cromarty to the south has it's focus on nature - Munlochy Bay bird reserves, the Black Isle Wildlife and Country Park, dolphins and whales in the Moray Firth, daily sightings of grey seals in the Cromarty Firth to name a few. Daily trips via boats from Cromarty or Fortrose will get you a closer view.

The majority of local distilleries (of which there are numerous - offer tours and tastings, if it is beer you prefer, try a visit to the Black Isle Brewery.
